Während der Reconquista Mitte des 13. Jhts., nachdem es wiederholt von den Almohaden beherrscht wurde, ging Jaén an Kastilien. Dessen Könige nannten die Stadt rund 200 Jahre später „sehr noble, berühmte und treue Stadt, Wächterin und Verteidigerin der Könige Kastiliens“. Von dort aus begann 1491 die Eroberung von Granada. Seit immer ist Jaén sehr stark von Landwirtschaft, sprich Olivenanbau, geprägt und auch für grosse Auswanderungswellen in den ’50ern und ’60ern bekannt. So stammte eine Zeit lang die Hälfte der Belegschaft der SEAT-Autofabrikken in Barcelona aus dieser Provinz.
During the Reconquista in the middle of the 13th century, after being repeatedly ruled by the Almohads, Jaén fell to the Crown of Castille. The castilian kings gave it 200 years later the title of „Most Noble, Famous and Loyal City, Guardian and Defender of the Kings of Castille“. and from here the Conquest of Granada was launched in 1491. Jaén has always been known for its agriculture, essentially the growing of olives, as well as the big emigration waves in the fifties and sixties. During this time, half of the workers at the SEAT car factories in Barcelona came from Jaén.

… und der Parador, unser Hotel, das ehemalige Castillo de Santa Catalina, hoch über der Stadt. Wir sind angetan von der mittelalterlichen Einrichtung des Hauses (man könnte sich verlaufen und auf dem Weg in den Esssaal verhungern), der stilvollen Einrichtung und der atemberaubenden Aussicht. Wir teilen General de Gaulles Begeisterung für diesen Ort.
…and the Parador, our hotel, built into the old Santa Catalina Castle, on a magnificent rock promontory that dominates the city. We are enthralled by the medieval decor ( you could easily get lost in the corridors and starve to death while walking all the way from the rooms to the dining hall), the restored halls and the splendid views. We share General de Gaulle’s enthusiam for this place.
